Abstract In 1998-99, AC Nielsen-BASES completed over 75 parallel tests between mall-intercept and Internet interviewing . To our knowledge, this is the largest parallel testing program that has been conducted on a standardized research technique over the Internet. It allowed us to make extremely detailed comparisons of mall and Internet consumer responses, exposing the strengths and weaknesses of each. Moreover, because BASES is now a division of AC Nielsen, our evaluation of the Internet responses was not simply versus our traditional technique, but versus in-market data — comparisons one rarely sees from survey researchers. The findings from this landmark R&D project will be presented in this paper.
